Measure your collar size by taking the tape measure and placing it flush around your neck.
How to measure shirt size with measuring tape. Measure the inside of the collar band. This is usually where the belly button is. Then use the measuring tape to measure from the center of the button where the button stitching comes through, to the far end of the inside button hole.
Keep your shoulders relaxed and arms down at your sides. The waist of the shirt will be the most narrow point. With your shirt’s back facing up, place your measuring tape at the bottom seam, at a point where the yoke (the fabric sitting across the shoulders) is attached to the sleeve.
Run the tape measure over your shoulder and down your arm to your wrist (about where the cuff of your shirt will stop.) this will give you an accurate sleeve measurement. Unbutton the shirt and spread it out on its back. Stand tall and keep both arms at your sides while the measuring tape is snug under both armpits.
Button up the shirt, position the meter horizontally below the seam of the armhole (underarm). If hem is asymmetrical, measure entire bottom hem and do not double. Be sure to relax your arms, allowing them to bend slightly.
Place a measuring tape across the shirt just below these seams. Measure the length of the shirt from top to bottom. In order to get an accurate measurement, place the measuring tape as high on your inner thigh as you can.
Put the first end of the measuring tape at the base of the back of your neck and measure down your back to the point where you’d want the shirt to be. To get the most comfortable fit, place two fingers between the tape measure and the neck when measuring. You can also take your favorite dress shirt and measure from the center of the button hole to the middle of the button on the opposite side of the collar.
Standard and slim fit dress shirts often have a size run of 14 to 19 1/2 inches. Before you learn how to measure sleeve length, there are a few things you need to know about reading dress shirt sizes. At the widest point of the sleeve, measure its across while laying flat.
Select a shirt that fits you well and is similar to the style you wish to purchase. Measure from the highest point of the shoulder to the desired hemline. Measure from the middle of the button hole to the center of the collar button.
Hold the measuring tape at the edge of your shoulder (the armhole), and measure straight down to where your wrist meets your hand. Stand up straight in a relaxed, normal position. Find the size of your or another woman’s chest by wrapping your measuring material around the back over your shoulder blades, under the armpits, and across the fullest part of the bust.
Let the end of the measuring tape drape just a bit, as a shirt sleeve would. The tape measure will start at the seam underneath the collar where it is sewn on to the shirt. Steps to measure a dress shirt.

Measure the sleeve along the outside edge, opposite the sleeve seam. Then, find where your waist would be on the shirt, then measure across it, from the left side seam to the right side seam. Measure from middle of the neck to end of shoulder (where sleeve starts).
Mark the exact measurement in inches or centimeters on a piece of paper so that you don't lose track. Spread out your take measure straight across the same spot on the other side of the shirt. Then, measure from edge to edge just below the armpit and double the number.
Make sure that the end is aligned with the left side seam, then measure across to the right side seam. Unbutton the shirt and spread it out, facing down. Take your tape measure and place one end at the center of the back of your neck. To be sure you are measuring with accuracy, we advise you to first lay the shirt on a table or any other flat surface. Most shirts range in neck size from 14 to 19 ½ inches.
Measure from the shoulder to the wrist. The first number—typically between 13 and 20—is the neck size. With the measuring tape flat against your leg, take the measurement the bottom of your ankle.
It can be helpful to ask someone to take this measurement for you. Find the seams where the sleeves attach to the shirt. Now, place one end of the fabric tape measure at the top of your shoulder seam, and the other end at the break of your wrist, or the wrist bone.
Hold your tape measure at the top of the collar on the front of your shirt and bring it down to the hem. Open the shirt and stretch out the neck, with the measuring tape measure from the center of the button hole to the center of the button to get the right measure. Wrap the tape under your arms and around your back to calculate chest width.
Don’t puff out your chest or flex, big fella. First, unbutton the shirt and spread it out, facing up. Stand erect with your arms at your side.
Measure twice to ensure the most accurate measurement. Just make sure the measuring tape is not too loose or too tight around the neck.
